U.S. SENATORS PROPOSE NEW RUSSIA SANCTIONS, KEEP PROMISE MADE TO UKRAINIAN MARINES

Michael MacKay, Radio Lemberg, 03.08.2018

Six United States Senators have introduced legislation to boost sanctions and other measures against Russia. The Defending American Security from Kremlin Aggression Act of 2018 is a response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and Russia’s falsification of the last US presidential election. Two of the Senators who are sponsoring the bill, Lindsey Graham and John McCain have visited Shyrokyne, Donetsk region, Ukraine which is on the battlefront where Russia is invading Europe in Donbas. They know first hand that Kremlin aggression poses an existential threat to Western civilization.

Senator Graham said in a statement released on August 2: “Our goal is to change the status quo and impose crushing sanctions and other measures against Putin’s Russia until he ceases and desists meddling in the U.S. electoral process, halts cyber-attacks on U.S. infrastructure, removes Russia from Ukraine, and ceases efforts to create chaos in Syria.”

Some of the key elements of the proposed legislation are: a requirement that the US only be able to exit the NATO alliance with a two-thirds vote of the Senate; new sanctions on the corrupt circle of the oligarchy and the siloviki around Putin; sanctions on Russian energy projects (that’s taking direct aim at the Nord Stream 2 scheme to damage the Ukrainian economy and wreck Europe’s energy security); a prohibition and sanctions on new sovereign debt for Russia; looking into designating Russia as a state sponsor of terrorism; a report on the net worth and assets of Putin (a crime boss who is most likely the wealthiest person who has ever lived).

On 8 November 2016, Russia falsified the result of the US presidential election in favour of Trump, a compromised asset of Russia’s intelligence services. Less than two months later, on New Years, three US Senators were visiting the front line of Russia’s invasion of Europe. Senators Lindsey Graham, John McCain, and Amy Klobuchar visited Shyrokyne, Ukraine, on the coast of the Sea of Azov, to meet with and support Ukrainian Marines (on photo). Shyrokyne is within mortar fire range of the Russian army which is invading Europe in Donbas. The Ukrainian Marines in that sector of the battlefront guard the approaches to the city of Mariupol.

At Shyrokyne, Senator McCain spoke to the Ukrainian Marines with these words: “I believe you will win. I am convinced you will win and we will do everything we can to provide you with what you need to win. … The world is watching because we cannot allow Vladimir Putin to succeed here because if he succeeds here, he will succeed in other countries.

Russian aggression can be defeated by helping Ukraine. Ukraine is the only fighting defender of Western civilization against the existential threat posed by invasion from Muscovy. On New Years Day of 2017, Senator Graham made a promise to the Ukrainian defenders: “Our promise to you is to take your cause to Washington, inform the American people of your bravery, and make the case against Putin to the world.” A year and a half later, the Defending American Security from Kremlin Aggression Act of 2018 goes some way towards keeping that promise.
