RUSSIAN FORCES KILLED A UKRAINIAN MEDIC

Michael MacKay, Radio Lemberg, 22.02.2018

Russian armed forces invading Ukraine attacked across the battlefront in Luhansk and Donetsk regions yesterday. Putin’s army has been doing this every day and night since April 2014. On February 21, Russian armed forces in the Luhansk sector of the battlefront attacked a Ukrainian armed forces medical evacuation armoured vehicle with an anti-tank guided missile. A medic, Sabina Halytska, was killed. Russia committed a gross violation of the Geneva Conventions, which afford protection for medical personnel, facilities, and evacuation platforms such a medevac vehicle marked with the distinctive emblem of the Red Cross on a white background.

Sabina Halytska was a nurse serving with the 10th Mountain Assault Brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. At the time of Russia’s missile attack, she was assisting the civilian population around the village of Krymske. Her vehicle was struck on a road 4 kilometres south of Krymske (which is in free Ukraine) at a point 40 kilometres west of the city of Luhansk (which is in Russia-occupied Ukraine). Sabina Halytska was 23 years old.

This is the second time the Russian invader-occupiers of Luhansk region have killed a medic in the same area. On 23 April 2017, the Russians detonated a roadside bomb to destroy a vehicle in an OSCE convoy near the village of Pryshyb. Killed in the explosion was a 36 year old American medic, Joseph Stone. He was serving as an unarmed monitor in the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe Special Monitoring Mission to Ukraine. The place where Joseph Stone was killed is only 10 kilometres from the place where Sabina Halytska was killed.

Russia is responsible for killing Sabina Halytska. Russian armed forces that are controlled, led, manned, armed, and paid by the Putin regime in Moscow launched the missile that struck the medevac vehicle and killed a medic giving aid and comfort to civilians in a war zone. Putin and the senior commanders of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation committed a war crime and a gross violation of the Geneva Conventions.

Add the unlawful killing of Sabina Halytska to the list of crimes against humanity that Putin and his henchmen may one day face in the International Criminal Court in the Hague. Rest in peace to a brave Ukrainian woman, who paid the supreme sacrifice in the service of her country.
