RUSSIA ATTACKS VILLAGE OF LEBEDYNSKE IN UKRAINE WITH 40 GRAD ROCKETS

Michael MacKay, Radio Lemberg, 21.04.2018

Russia’s escalating violence against Ukraine goes from bad to worse. On Friday, the Russian invaders of Europe in Crimea and Donbas launched an attack with rockets against a village to the east of the city of Mariupol, Ukraine.

Just before six o’clock in the morning on April 20, Russian invaders of Ukraine launched a heavy bombardment of defenders at Lebedynske in Donetsk region, firing rockets from Grad multiple launch rocket systems. Over a two hour period, the Russians launched 40 missiles from BM-21 launch vehicles that were stationed in the occupied village of Sakhanka. Sakhanka is 7 kilometres due east of the defensive positions of the Ukrainian armed forces in front of the village of Lebedynske. As well as firing rockets at Ukrainian defenders at Lebedynske, the Russians shot six 82 millimetre mortar shells, used grenade launchers, and fired large-calibre machine guns.

The Russian invasion-occupation army at Sakhanka also had 122 millimetre artillery systems, and were firing salvoes at the defenders of the village of Shyrokyne, which is 6 kilometres to the south-east of Lebedynske. From their fire positions, the Russians also used 120 millimetre mortars against the villages of Shyrokyne, Vodiane, and Novotroitske.

Defenders in the Mariupol sector took a heavy beating on the morning of April 20 from across Russia’s invasion-of-Europe battlefront. But the Ukrainian armed forces prevailed, and gave no ground in Muscovy’s onslaught.

Russian armed forces in the occupied zone of Donetsk region in Ukraine are organized as the 1st Army Corps (so-called “Donetsk People’s Republic”). The 2nd Army Corps is in Russian-occupied Luhansk region. These are regular and irregular Russian soldiers, serving as contract soldiers or mercenaries or ‘private military company’ soldiers. The 1st and 2nd Army Corps are led by Russian officers, are armed, supplied and paid by Russia, and have no loyalty other than to the Putin regime in Russia.

The 1st and 2nd Army Corps are given a limitless supply of weapons from Russia. From where the 1st Army Corps was stationed at Sakhanka on the morning of April 20, it is a 34 kilometre journey by road to the international Ukraine-Russia border crossing, along the Taganrog Highway just to the east of Novoazovsk, Donetsk, Ukraine. But the border crossing is entirely controlled by Russia, and not by the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine. Russia moves military resupply across the border without any checks by Ukraine or by the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe Special Monitoring Mission to Ukraine. Russia fired 40 rockets at Ukraine, and it is capable of launching a limitless number because Putin’s war resupply convoys are not being stopped.

There will be more attacks by Russia on Ukraine. Putin is at war with the West, and he will not stop until he is stopped. Russia’s attack on Lebedynske, Ukraine with “Grad” rockets is what was bound to happen after four years of Western appeasement and half-hearted enforcement of feeble sanctions. Each of the 40 Russian rockets on April 20 was a rebuke to a failure of policy and a failure of will on the part of Western leaders. They should be a call to action: to liberate Crimea and Donbas and defeat Russia.
